And another one bites the dust!
So now that it's over .....Have ya Herd? Paulsboro took it to Woodbury and the Patriot Division Champs belongs to the mighty mighty Red Raiders. The blue and the gold faithful were feeling pretty froggy at the beginning of the contest. Young Hodges lost his slippery grip on the ball and an alert buffalo man was on it, taking it in for the first score of the game. That whole sideline ignited into a frenzy believeing that was going to set the mood for the remainder of the game.As if the Thundering Herd was going to rock our world all afternoon. Woodbury was up 7 early and then the unthinkable, another fumble by QB Hodges. Could this be the day that Gerald becomes completely unglued and can't lead his team out of a paper bag.
Silly, silly Woodbury. You're playing Paulsboro. Paulsboro doesn't just say oh well and pack it in. Paulsboro re-evaluates the sitation, snaps back into game mode and starts again. Those young fellas came out on that field yesterday poppin. If Willie Anderson had ten more pounds to call his own, there may not have been any bison left.
I honestly believe the game was mentally over for Woodbury when Paulsboro tied the score at 7-7. It was something you could actually feel in the stadium yesterday. The momentum of the score from the fumble was now a distant memory that meant nothing because Hodges ran that ball in with so much confidence and expectation and like he expected to continue to do it at will. He was not impressed with the opposition and he was going to show them.
Darren Carter made his presence felt in no uncertain terms. I didn't know young Carter had such a competitive streak in him. I was sitting in the stand at the 50 yd line and I heard the hit he but on the boy down by the score board side.
Zach "the Water Boy" Greenwald decided to disrupt everything Woodbury had planned. I had to laugh on the one "almost" interception Zach had. He turned around as the ball hit him and he looked at it like "what's this?" You could tell he wanted that one over again. Actually there were a few opportunties to spearate the Herd from the ball and the Raiders were giving it their best shot.
Big Man Hodges makes me crazy. One minute I want to hug him, the next I want to poke him in the eye. I'm usually complaing that he doesn't pass it enough but tucks it and runs instead. He proved me wrong big time when he kept his head up and found Amir Love (#11) on the Herd sideline. You could see that Amir had nothing but daylight in front of him but first, he had to catch the ball. That was the chant you heard coming from the 50 yd line in the stands....CATCH THE BALL,,,CATCH THE BALL. God bless'em, he not only caught but the he hauled his tail feathers all the way into the Herd endzone. I almost feel like singing again.
The thing that worries me most about Big Man is his strength. Seriously. This guy is being tackled in every direction by everybody in a herd uniform and he is still zigging and zagging for one more inch. I'm no football guru but I'm voting for him to get what he can get under normal circumstances and then go down. I cringe because I am so afraid of injury. There's nothing prettier though that watching him make up his mind early on to hit the hole full force and then power all the way to the score.
I think Cory Cooper was really missed by his teammates out on that field. They know they can count on him and you can't really replace him. That being said, Old Sarge was just having his way out there on that field. Let's not even mention Doak. Has everyone else watched this metamorphisis from a kid who didn't want any physical contact to this beast that wears #54. Personnally, I think when Superman goes to bed he puts on his David Doak pajamas.
I felt kinda bad for Stefon Archie yesyerday. He hit a few holes nice but he couldn't get anything going downfield. My suggestion, when you hit the hole, get your head and see where your going. Use your gut and take what they're giving you. And Darius Quarles needs another big one like in the Audubon game. But this time he needs 6 points. I'm thinking it's going to come at a very strategic point in a game and his catch will make the differnce. Either the WD game or the SJG! finals.
Speaking of which - Paulsboro may have to pack our bags this year and travel to the land of the Bulldogs in December. Damned power points. Without getting into all the particulars (and there are A LOT of particulars) if Paulsboro and Glassboro both win this week (Paulsboro has Gateway, Glassboro has Penns Grove) then we have a tie for PP. If Penns grove should come out victorous, Paulsboro gets #1 - if Collingswood beats WD, Paulbsboro gets that residual point and get #1. BUT.....if Glassboro beats Penns Grove and Cwood loses to WD....we'll be making the trek to Glassboro on December 1st. Paulsboro is not happy about travelling. We like our comfy cozy seats. You know of course that there will be a monsoon that day. The wind will be blowing the rain sideways. Dejavu all over again. I refuse to this about it anymore until the Friday night games are decided.
Regardless of the who plays who where on December 1st, there is still a game to be played the week prior to that. The good old Thanksgiving Day game. You wouldn't think a Paulsboro fan would want to even mention this upcoming contest but hold up - the reign ends here. This time won't even be close. WD doesn't nearly have the strength or power that they have had recently. Their mystic is gone. They've been struggling through their schedule and have even been handed a loss by the Wave of Audubon. On the contrary, Paulsboro has dominated every team they've faced. The few point that have been scored against the Raiders have not come while their starting defense was on the field. That's a stingy group.
Then even better is that the Raider Nation is hosting a pancake breakfast on the Sunday after the Paulsboro/WD game in the PHS cafeteria. Maybe it's just me but I'm envisioning a very festive atmosphere. We'll be able to sit, relax scarf down some pancakes and sausage while we re-live each and every moment from the game the day before.
OK, if I don't stop here, this could get a little....hmmmm.....colorful to say the least. I can't say it enough though - this is the year. 12 and 0 baby. SJG1 three-peat! This wouldn't be the first time Paulsboro has gone into Glassboro for the Championship game and ruined Glassboro's Parade plans. I believe the year was 1974 and the Glassboro announcers kept reminding people of the Christmas parade immediately following the game to celebrate the Championship. Rut Ro Reorge.
Before we do anything else, we need to eat up them Gators. Stay focused and take it one glorious win at a time. Ready when you are.
